Biography

Praised by orchestras for his inspiring musicianship and expressive technique, British conductor Angus Webster is one of the most promising musicians of his generation. Since winning joint top prize and the orchestra prize at the Jorma Panula International Conducting Conducting Competition in 2018, Angus was selected to become one of the first Salonen Fellows at the Colburn School in Los Angeles where he studies under the mentorship of Esa-Pekka Salonen assisting him with his engagements around the world.

Highlights of Angus' 20/21 season include his debut with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra performing Brahms' Symphony No. 4 in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. In February 2020, Angus made his debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducting Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, Eroica and Brahms' Symphony No. 2. In October 2019, Angus conducted and presented outreach concerts with Colburn School's Zipper Orchestra for thousands of children across Los Angeles.

Born in 1999, Angus spent his childhood in Cornwall, England, and began his musical studies aged six with piano lessons from Elena Needham. At the age of nine, he started producing and presenting a classical music programme live on local radio in Cornwall, and three years later Angus made his conducting debut with Cornwall Youth Orchestra in Tchaikovsky's Romeo & Juliet. He later became principal conductor, and together they went on to perform at Birmingham Symphony Hall and Royal Albert Hall in London.

Angus is also a dedicated chamber musician and enjoys collaborating as a pianist with musicians around the world. He has studied piano with Alasdair Beatson, viola with Tim Boulton, conducting with Patrick Bailey, and chamber music with Ferenc Rados and Rita Wagner at the International Musicians Seminar, Prussia Cove. (April 2020)
